After playing for a few years (love this game better than Trimps), I was helping a friend of mine wanting to play - she knew nothing about these types of games, but was intrigue. So describing how to start from my advanced position was not really feasable, so I started over. The following is what I came up with that should help you with food in the early stages of the game, after this, you are on your own, or check out other advanced tutorials:
This is a short guide to get you through the first year and not starve your kitties :-)
1 first year until spring, just build CATNIP FIELDS. Level: 40-45+ That is ALL YOU NEED TO DO
When winter arrives, do NOTHING! Just ride it out.
Next: Spring. Note your food should be fine and were still making positive catnip income LOL. Prob sitting around 0.69%/sec
Try to do the following before winter - should be pretty easy. Anything that says to open something up, you can manualy click to speed it up if you want.
Start Processing for wood to build a hut
This will bring in 2 kittens put them to work getting wood
Refine again to build library
Now build a hut and the next 2 kittens put in scholar
Build another library (refining wood faster if needed)
Wait til calendar(science) opens op and click it
Drop wood cutters and put them in scholar to get more points
Will be close but get the agriculture and put your cats in there
Change your small village to 0W, 5F, and 1S
Refine catnip to get a barn (1) if you can get higher before winter even better.
Once agriculture is done, wait out the year
That setup should get you positive food all the time, and you can explore on your own, or visit some other vids for more advance methods.

Good answer, the only reason I did it this way is because, shame on me, I usually play at work when I get a free minute. While your method will work if you have a little time on your hand, but if you don’t I always Overkill the first year that’s why if I have to walk away I don’t have to worry about it depending. -75% is a big drop if I don’t have that field up high enough. Never tried it low around 20’s though. Thanks for the reply

You can do it quite easily in the first year and be positive before winter and get Agriculture. Just get around 20 or so catnip fields, then focus on getting four kittens by refining catnip, after having 2 huts then focus on creating more catnip fields while you create a library and work your way towards getting farmers. You should be able to do that without having to wait until the following year easily.
